The Whelp's Companion Add to Chrome
A side panel companion for every player at the table

Small dragon.
Big memory.

Someone at your table just asked how grappling works. Again. The Whelp's Companion keeps the answer one keystroke away: a searchable, fully editable rules screen that lives in your browser's side panel, right next to your maps, your music, and your video call.

No account. No tracking. No subscription. Everything lives on your machine.

Every table knows the moment

The game stops. The wiki-diving begins.

You are mid-encounter. Your rogue wants to shove the ogre off the bridge, the cleric is prone, and somebody is on fire. Then it comes: "wait, how does that actually work?" Twelve browser tabs later, the answer is buried under three ads and a forum argument from 2014, and your table's momentum is gone.

The Whelp's Companion was built for exactly that moment, by a GM, for the players sitting on the other side of the screen. It is for every player at the table, written with brand new players especially in mind: the rules are curated into bite-sized cards instead of walls of text, so nobody has to know where to look before they can look something up.

Open it anywhere

Lives in your browser's side panel, or pops out into its own window for a second monitor. It never steals focus from your game.

Keep playing

Read the card, take your turn, roll the dice. The whelp goes back to sleep until the next "wait, how does..."

Swap systems in a click

The badge in the corner is a dropdown. Pick a system and the whole screen, content and colors and fonts, becomes that game's companion.

Yours. Actually yours.

Everything is stored locally and exports to a single JSON file. Back it up, share it, theme-swap it. No cloud, no login, no nonsense.

Starter templates included

Six systems. One whelp.

Every template is New Player scoped: the core turn loop, common actions, checks and saves, and a personal notebook. It is what a first-timer actually needs at the table, and what a veteran wants within reach.

D&D 5E (2024) Pathfinder 2E Starfinder 2E Tales of the Valiant Cosmere RPG Daggerheart

Game content is used under each system's open license (CC-BY, ORC, DPCGL, and friends). Full attribution lives on every template's About & License tab.

Sitting behind the screen instead?

The Whelp's Companion is for players. The GM Quick Screen is for you.

Same framework, same speed, same obsessive theming. A separate app built for the GM side of the table, with the references you reach for while you are running the game rather than playing in it.

Built by a GM, for the players at his table.

Hi, I'm JD, your friendly DM/GM. I have been playing TTRPGs for a very long time (51 years) and running them for most of it. I built the Whelp's Companion because I wanted something I could hand my players: fast, theirs, and always right where the game already is.

It is hand-built with vanilla JS, HTML, and CSS. No frameworks, no bloat, no server watching over your shoulder. If it has made your table better, the tip jar is always open, and the Feedback button (or gusnbru.us) reaches me directly.
